Agree. I'm just a Catholic mom trying to raise my kids to love Jesus. I wish I didn't wince when almost anything comes out from the Vatican. Could we maybe tell people about Jesus, who died for their sins and rose from the dead and offers forgiveness and salvation?

Melody, thank you for writing this. I am the mother of an adult daughter who moved many states away in the name of furthering her education. In the mean time, an atheist husband happened, Covid lockdowns, Anime, alcoholism, dyed hair, tattoos, mental breakdowns and a divorce. My continuous prayer for her is that she return to her faith…she does not need another Anime figure to lead her back to Christ. She needs truth, beauty, family and a faith that gently shows her what is and will always be there for her to return to.

I’m so sorry, Lynn. What a heartbreaking journey. I join in your prayer for her and I add one for you… that you may have peace and courage as you prayerfully wait for her to respond to the Holy Spirit working in her life. Oh, how He loves her! And He loves you. And He intends to heal you both. God bless you ♥️

I don’t understand the need for a mascot for the Catholic Church, we have a symbol and it’s called the Crucifix and it represents everything we believe and it is timeless. We’re not a sports team or a social club, there is no need for mascots here.

But, in this upside down world that now has also infected our church, they go to people with questionable fetishes to develop mascots, hoping to attract who?

Luce is an odd name that resembles Lucifer way too much. We’re surrounded by his name everywhere, why that name of all names for this mascot? Then there’s the odd rainbow imagery.

If I’ve learned one thing since 2020 it’s that I never look at anything innocently anymore. There are no coincidences, everything is overt, assuming that we are all too stupid to see through the obvious. I disagree with others who do not think that this is them digging into the well of nastiness. They’ve only been digging for over 60 years, why would they stop now?

We have another image we all know, a beautiful woman who points to her beloved son. That is the only blue image (usually she wears a blue mantle ) I choose to love and hold to. If she holds anything, it’s not a staff, it’s a rosary.

They are making our church look stupid and small and insignificant. We are mature enough that we don’t need cutesy symbols or imagery, we need the reverent and the beautiful, what we have had for 2000 years (or maybe 1965 years).

Hmm...I don't think we need a Catholic mascot, especially not one as uninspired and fictional as this. When we look for God we are looking for something of substance and timelessness, not a cartoon. Does the Vatican really have such little faith in the Gospel that they think we need toys and treats to entice us in?

Having said that, I expect 2025 will zoom past like a jet plane and we'll all be like - Luce who??

In all seriousness, though, it is deeply sad that so much of anime culture is tainted by pornography, the infantilization of women, and the sexualization of children. I have seen some examples of anime television and films that are truly beautiful and thought-provoking works of art. Good anime exists! I was very drawn to it as a child and teenager. I didn't have much access to it so I wasn't aware of its darker side, but I did compare it to the hideous visual style of popular Western animations (e.g. "Spongebob" and "The Wild Thornberries") and preferred it 1000%. (On that topic, it makes me furious that animated television for children is often such inhuman trash - children deserve real beauty!). Anyway, now I more aware of the issues with anime culture, but as with all products of this world, we have to seek the good and reject the evil. Parents have to walk that line of discernment even more carefully. And it's okay to have different tastes :)

As always, your thoughts are interesting and well-written! Thank you for sharing them! And God bless you and your family as you prepare for the wedding and All Saints and All Souls Day!

Maybe someone should ask "Progressive Catholic" Mike ... progressive Catholic is a concept like dry water, cold fire etc ... ask him if he's "OK with" tokidoki's other product lineups under the tokidoki x brand, which features vibrators and sex toys emblazoned with anime graphics that will surely be a big hit with fun-loving folks ... of ALL ages?

First thought to come to mind for some will be ... oh but surely no one at the Vatican knew about these products. Once upon a time I'd have guessed that too. Today I am sure the designer and brand were chosen specifically because the products include "sex toys" that generate earnings and also acceptance for open pedophilia, which is the next taboo that the "love is love" crowd intends to abolish.

Without even clicking on your links, I was able to find a mainstream reference in a Glamour magazine review. Thanks for the heads up. I'm not at all surprised. It squares with the entire animé world. And yes, Rome knew. Maybe not everyone, but someone.

Thank you for replying, Miss Lyons. Not my style to come crashing into a Stack I’ve never visited with something so jarring. But people need to know the WHOLE truth. And yes, the entire story here reeks of pedophilia. In the name of Christ … God forgive them. We are a minority of Catholics who can even begin to imagine what goes on behind closed doors in the luxury apartments of Vatican City.

I will now delete my comment, or at least delete the links. This is what I did yesterday, left them up only for the day and deleted them. Hard stuff to stomach for many.

First time at your Stack. Thought the article was excellent. Wishing you every success!

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your insight. I don’t prefer to focus on the ugliness within the Vatican but, as a mom, I need to speak to protect the vulnerable. If Luce is being peddled to our families, then we should know.

I have radically reduced my posts criticizing Bergoglio and his wrecking crew — for the wellbeing of my own soul, first of all. These people are, after all, pitiful. But some things are so egregious that I cannot let them go without sounding the alarm. This was one of them. All the best!
